An short article about the possible negatives of buy local campaigns on the free trade agreement with the US -
An agriculture counsellor with the US Embassy in Canberra, Andrew Burst, says a buy local campaign could endanger our export markets.
“It doesn’t really sound like free trade to me and we have entered a free trade agreement between our two countries on January 1,” he said.
“I’m not saying this is contrary to the free trade agreement. It’s just doesn’t sound to me that it’s in the spirit of free trade.”
What does the sale of Australian fruit and vegetables have to do with libraries? Given that much of the debate about the USAFTA hinged on the the impact on local media production, it’s not unlikely that this could impact local writers and illustrators. Libraries have not been unknown to conduct campaigns to encourage the reading of Australian literature, and there was of course Books Alive! run by the government, no less. Could such programs be under threat in the FTA age?
