Import existing references into CiteULike

Good news for CiteULike fans, you can now import BibTeX files and save having to recreate reference lists all over again. I’m an EndNote user (unfortunately) so it’s a two step-process for me - the first to convert my references to BibTeX (using an output filter) and then to check that the references have a unique identifier.

A typical BibTeX output record looks like this -

@misc{
Author = {Australian Library and Information Association},
Title = {Public library services},
Volume = {2004},
Number = {March 10},
Year = {1999} }

But CiteULike expects to see an identifier after @misc{ so I just need to number or name each record. Annoying, but still time-saving. Easiest way to do it is to modify the template and add author after @(type), eg for journal article -

@article{Author,
Label,
`Author = {`Author`},`
`Title = {`Title`},`
`Journal = {`Journal`},`
`Volume = {`Volume`},`
`Number = {`Issue`},`
`Pages = {`Pages`},`

Where there is more than one reference with the same author, I then just need to add a number. This would be easier if I could just drop in reference number instead of author. It’s messy, and still requires some manual adjustment (as authors are often organisations, which are too long for the CiteULike filter) but it’s a start.

See some of the recent additions to my CiteULike page.
