Last night’s episode of Enough Rope (an hour-long interview show - dare I say it, Australia’s version of Parkinson) featured Bono who apart from talking about U2, Bob Geldof and Product Red, told a story about the burning of libraries in Sarajavo -
“[…] We took our shoes off, we went in to meet this war-time President who was a scholar. He told us the story of the burning library, one of the great libraries of civilisation was in Sarajevo with ancient Islamic, Jewish, Christian books. It was deliberately targeted by the usurpers and the people in the siege. They burned down this library. He told us this amazing story. For days, even a week later, after this bombing, words from these sacred manuscripts were falling still through the sky. People walking around Sarajevo with these priceless words falling on them like rain.”
Perhaps Bono could be encouraged to join IFLA’s Blue Shield committee?
