Census time again

The arrival of Census forms in my mailbox tonight announces the start of the statistical season. One of the first tasks I had while working in a library was to alphabetise the Census microfiche at my local public library during year 10 work experience. The Census has been a big part of my work as a librarian ever since.

Using and explaining information from the Australian Bureau of Statistics and the Census is a large part of what reference librarians do in any type of library in Australia. Attending a CData course in 2002 was one of the best continuing education courses I’ve ever attended. I no longer use the software, but I use information about how the ABS collects data, how it can be manipulated, and what the limitations are.

For those in need of more information about understanding the Census or statistics of all kinds, the ABS runs a series of training sessions.

So, what’s new?
