As I am developing a couple of articles now that NLS2006 is over, I found a post from The Economist’s Free Exchange blog, Doing the Books rather timely:
“In the case of authors, particularly journalists, they generally expend a great deal of time, effort, and emotional frisson in writing a good-sized article. At the end of it, the author is invariably left with far more material than he can cram into five or ten thousand words… The natural response is to seek an outlet for this overflow, at which time a lightbulb appears. “I will write a book!” he says to himself, rubbing his hands in glee. “A book will use all this excess material.”"
For me though, it’s not about turning an article into a book it’s blog post/project/activity to article.
Something I’ve found challenging when blog writing is determining how much research to do for a blog post vs going all out and writing an article. That I haven’t published other than technical materials and newsletter articles in some time, nor really gotten into scholarly type discussions here shows I have never really decided on how to balance these things!
