Year in review 2006

The 22nd seems to have become my regular year in review date. I’ve just cleaned my desk at work, thrown out two boxes of paper, and will have a leisurely week off next week.

This year was another good year, with a (now) minor dramas but overall a good one.

I travelled more than ever this year, flying back over the date line on January 1 from Hawaii, family holiday to Singapore in January, conference in Portugal, and the US, Canada and Japan in June-July. Thus sustaining my goal of spending a couple of months overseas every year. I travelled a total of 54, 584 mi, or 87, 810 km. I feel a great sense of guilt over the carbon footprint that brings. It’s something I try to offset in other parts of my life.

I attended three conferences in ‘06. I received a grant to go to Portugal, went to ALA Annual during my annual holidays, and helped to organise the third.

I wrote four articles for my library association’s newsmagazine, inCite. But nothing peer reviewed - I was too busy with the conference. I served on six committees in all during the year - which was in hindsight too many not in terms of work but in terms of keeping things straight in my mind. There will be two fewer next year, as I’ll be handing over Mentoring and the conference is over. I received an ALIA Silver Pin this year.

An exhibition I mentioned almost a year ago is now open, Second Life is taking off in the library world, I’ve added to the LISauthor wiki, and went to ABC No Rio on their victorious day.

The drama of the year was that our landlord decided to sell the apartment we’d been living in for more than 6 years. They called to tell us the news while we were at dinner in New York. It took us almost 3 months to find a new place, thanks to Sydney’s overheated rental market. Thankfully, we ended up in a location we really like.

Next year’s travel plans have begun, we’ll be going to Berlin, Paris and London for a couple of weeks with friends. We’re going to see Michel Polnareff play at Bercy, keeping a pact from our Babypop days to see Polnareff anywhere if he ever toured again.

As Tori said, Pretty Good Year.
